Keeper

Keeper

Postby Jon on Tue Mar 17, 2009 7:45 pm

We all know what a good little keeper Nathan Crabtree is and how he helps the u14's team in their efforts. Well today I got a real surprise. Nathan was playing for the school, Hameldon, in a cup game. What was the surprise, well he wasn't in goal. His teacher wanted him to play out and put him in the back four on the left. I know now why he did that and Nathan told me later his teacher won't let him back in goal even if he wanted to.

Although Nathan is my grandson apart from primary school I'd never seen him play out and didn't realise just how good he is. I knew he had ball skills, that's obvious watching him mess about with one but to carry that over onto the pitch in a game was brilliant. His dribbling skills were at times awesome regularly beating two and three players before laying off good passes to team mates. His tackling is as good as I've seen anywhere this year at his age group and the opposition winger was probably glad when the game finished after Nathan dumped him on his backside at least half a dozen times during the game, legally as well. 8)

If Nathan doesn't grow and unable to fullfill his wish to be a keeper, with the right coaching he's a very promising prospect for an outfield player. The teacher did get it wrong today with Nathan, he should have played him midfield, he'd really have given them a headache then.

I know this is not strictly a Saints topic but he is a Saints player and I think his performance today is worthy of a mention. Biased view of a grandad.

Thanks Paula, I was really proud of him today, he came off that field looking like he'd been in a fight, two bad grazes on his knee, a cut on his stomach and one on his arm.  Hardly surprising the way he went in with some of the tackles.
Think it's the bravery and madness of being a keeper he's not frightened of anyone however big they are.
